As the Audax Randonneé solstizio d’inverno, organised by Fabio Albertoni, is unfortunately (temporarily) not taking place this year, I thought about whether we could still go on the night ride around Lake Garda on this special day.
What are we doing exactly?
We celebrate the winter solstice night, the longest night of the year, with a bike ride around Lake Garda.
We start in Arco and cycle northwards on the cycle path. The cycle path climbs a few metres in elevation.
We cycle past Lake Toblino on the road to Santa Massenza. Then we roll down the same route and back to Arco. Depending on the weather, this section of the route could be a little cooler. If it has snowed beforehand, the cycle path could also be covered in snow, in which case we take a side road past Lago di Cavedine.
In any case, be careful on the cycle path, especially on the descents, as there may be slippery patches at this time of year.
Back in Arco, we fortified ourselves briefly with a hot drink😂. Then it was off to the Lake Garda circuit in a clockwise direction.
In Peschiera you can warm up briefly and top up your reserves (McDonald’s is open until 2.00 a.m.), then head back to Arco along the Gardesana Occidentale.
The trip is a spectacle of lights through the Christmas-decorated towns on Lake Garda. As the lake has a temperature-equalising effect, it’s not that cold.
You should know that!
The tour is a good 200 km long with approx. 1200 metres in elevation.
Maximum number of participants: 10 people; however, more cyclists could also join spontaneously
Special requirements: The pace will be adapted to the core group
Time & duration: Departure at 20:00 – The duration depends on the pace
(+/- 8h movement time)
Meeting point / location: Arco, the exact meeting point is still to be defined. Possibly at the car park, Parcheggio alla Sarca or at the Christmas market 😋 …
Bike of choice/equipment: road bike or gravel bike (the roads could be a bit slippery in the south of the lake due to freezing fog; I have ridden the night route with all types of bikes (RR, MTB, gravel)).
Please adapt your clothing to the expected temperatures and weather conditions!
